If you have a roach problem you have probably been shocked by the sight of hundreds of roaches scuttling for cover when you turn on the kitchen light. Using chemical dust is a good alternative weapon in the fight against roaches. Dust is slow-acting and requires patience. But if applied properly dust is as effective, and longer-lasting than misting pesticides. Dust can be found at supermarkets, department stores, and other venues that offer pest extermination products.
Dust can blow away with a slight breeze so it is best to add a little boric acid to the dust. The boric acid helps the dust adhere to the roaches’ legs. When the roach cleans itself or eats it will become poisoned. Make sure the dust is not applied to a place that is frequented by your pets, as it can make them sick or even kill them. The best place to put dust is around a source of water. When the roaches come to take a drink they will get the dust on them, drink the water, and contaminate their bodies. This will ultimately kill them.
Make sure that you do not apply the dust to open areas where there might be food or drink for humans or pets. It is not wise to place dust on a countertop or on a table where someone might eat it unintentionally. Place the dust and more discreet areas: underneath the kitchen sink and behind the toilet. It's unlikely that a child or a pet will get into the dust in these out-of-the-way, hard to reach places. Keep the dust away from your plants, which would be damaged by the boric acid. If you do want to keep your plans soil free from cockroaches, poor little bit of vinegar into the soil.
If you're accidentally get some dust on them they need to contact the veterinarian immediately. Keep them from licking their paws or their hair. Most pet owners feel that it is unwise to use roach dust when they have a pet in the house. If you do have a pet you might want to board your pet for a week or two or keep your pet outside until the roaches are gone.
