Besides food, water is the most important factor in the life of a cockroach. The only things they fear more than thirst is the bottom of your shoe. Cockroaches can survive a few days without food if they have a steady supply of water, but thirst kills them quickly. If you live in an area that is usually wet and you are experiencing a drought or a dry spell, roaches will come into your house looking for shade and water.

You can stop their encroachment by getting rid of any standing water and other spilled liquids. Don't leave dirty dish water or even a glass of water lying around your kitchen. Tighten any leaks in your bathroom or kitchen sink; make sure that your toilet lid is securely placed on the bowl. Even though the cockroach may be able to slide underneath the toilet lid, your toilet is designed with an over-hang lip that bugs will fall in the water if they try to climb out of the bowl.

Under your refrigerator there is a pan that catches excess moisture. Be sure to empty the pan regularly and keep it dry. Take the time to move your refrigerator periodically and clean the floor below it. Inevitably you’ll find a crumb of food or two, and that’s a feast for the cockroach: a warm dark restaurant where dozens of bugs can crowd in. Another source of moisture is your pets’ drinking dishes. Dry the floor around these bowls periodically: the drips from your pets’ mouths can become a roach playground.

Try to be water-conscious not only inside your house, but outside also. If you have tires or cans in your yard make sure that they are free of moisture. Not only do roaches congregate around these items but they are also a breeding ground for mosquitoes. If you can’t remove these objects (kids love a tire swing) then check them for water frequently. Also make sure that the low lying areas of your yard are free of clutter in case water builds up in them. You can use sand, gravel, or topsoil to fill these low-lying areas in.
